Baptism Frequently Asked Questions

What is baptism?

An outward expression of an inward reality; a profession of faith in Jesus Christ that is recognized and affirmed by a community of faith.
(Matthew 3:13-17; Romans 6:3-4)

Why Should I Be Baptized?

The simple answer is: Because Jesus said you should and led by example! It’s also a tremendous opportunity for you to invite family and friends to attend who don’t know Jesus personally. This is a great way of sharing your faith in Christ with others!
(Matthew 28:19-20)

Why does BridgeWay practice baptism by immersion?

Baptism is symbolic in two ways.  Going under the water symbolizes our dying to self and sin.  Emerging from the water symbolizes our being raised with Christ and cleansed by His Spirit.  We believe immersion is the best way to express and experience the meaning of baptism  because it’s the way Jesus was baptized and practiced baptism.
(Colossians 2:12; Acts 8:38-39)

What is believers’ baptism?

We believe the Bible sets a precedent of baptizing people after they have decided to commit their lives to Jesus.  We mean no disrespect to those who have been baptized as infants, but we believe it’s best to make your own choice to be baptized after making your own personal decision to become a follower of Christ.
(Acts 2:41; Acts 8:12-13)

What about being baptized twice?

If you have not been baptized since becoming a believer, we recommend that you be baptized—even if you were baptized earlier in life.  It doesn’t devalue a prior experience, it simply reflects your desire to follow and be obedient to Jesus.  If you were baptized after you became a follower of Christ at a different church, you don’t have to be baptized again at BridgeWay unless you absolutely want to.

When can I be baptized?

We hold Sunday baptism services at least 3 times during the year.  We also occasionally schedule baptisms in alternate locations.  Ask one of the BridgeWay pastors or elders if you would like further details.
