Josh's Student Ministry Blog

parents and students-
thanks for stopping by... i'm attempting to be a faithful blogger at followjdr.posterous.com
"who do i follow?" is a question that we all get to ask...
in 1 corinthians 11. paul writes: follow me, as i follow Christ. as a pastor, the example that i set is being followed--despite what 'sir charles' say:

the bible is full of direct opposition to this video. one of the bible verses that i've memorized since my junior year and attempted to realize is Matt 5:14--living as a city on a hill... a life that's not hidden, that is authentic, and an example to look at.
i'm writing this as a pastor, but it's a call for EVERYONE to be a person of influence.
parents and students- we don't have to be the "leader" to be a person of influence... we follow Christ. this is the process becoming more like Jesus. as i learn about Him, there is a lifestyle change that begins to happen, the dirt and junk in my life comes to the surface--i do the hard work of asking forgiveness and turning from those habits... and allow Him to define me. that day to day, walking and talking life is how i become a person of influence. it answers MY question of "who" and my lifestyle answers the "why" for others.
thanks for reading!

69 people, 4 houses, in 3 days... and a new perspective on the Kingdom. BridgeWay families spent time hammering, chopping, giving piggy-back rides, and attempting to speak Spanish with families in Baja Mexico. We practiced being the church and creating meaningful relationships with the families that blessed us with their love.
We shared food, hugs, and splinters over the course of a few days—but our eyes were opened as we saw lifestyle differences immediately: no bathrooms or indoor plumbing, roller-coaster roads, and we built a house that was 12’x16’—almost the size of our students’ rooms!

Rather than let those differences separate us, our team did an amazing job of being flexible and honest with what we experienced. Our focus became accomplishing the projects of building a house (complete with bunk beds, propane oven/stove, and dining room table and chairs) and building relationships.

One house had young girls whose prized possessions were some young puppies, and wonderful parents, grandparents, friends—even watermelon! Another house had the high school boys disappear to return with luchador masks on! One house had students who were too busy throwing, carrying, and wrestling local kids to help Pastor Craig clean up… ha! And the final house was shocked to realize that $60 would send a teen back to school each year—so she didn’t have to stop at 5th grade.

These relationships are what will keep our church going back… we’ve already had some emails asking when the next trip will be planned! Thank you for supporting prayers and the encouragement as we work to be Christ’s hands and feet.

BridgeWay's Summer

Summer is a funny time at churches. It is a season of the year when most people assume that the church relaxes, put the messages and programs on cruise control, and waits for fall to pick the energy back up.
Actually, here at BridgeWay, summer is an incredibly exciting time- we welcomed back our Nicuragua and Mexico mission trip teams; we have a justice project that will connect with over 100 families—using “Back to School” bags (socks, underwear, pajamas for local families that would not make these objects a priority); we are teaching through Revelation… let’s see that on cruise control!
And we have seen the number of visitors and new families here at jump. Every week we invite people to fill out welcome cards and follow up with multiple new families. When we make that time to listen and welcome folks- we remember that people want to be known.
I grew up in a church that was so small, if you were new… the whole church new. Later, I worked at a church that asked… told!... visitors to stand up.
As a staff at BridgeWay, we anticipate that as a community—you are taking it on yourself to welcome those who you don’t know. Asking a question like: how long have you been at BWay? And looking to connect visitor with people you know here in are church are the ways new families become a part of our community.
Some of our BridgeWay values are:
            Intentionality- we are witnesses
Community- we are a unified body
            Authenticity- geniuine…
If you’d like to learn more, hear BWay’s story, or have a chance to talk with an elder or pastor- start at our TASTE OF BWAY, August 1st during second service in the annex.
On the slat board you can grab a “WHO WE ARE; WHAT WE BELIEVE”, or feel free to contact the office and we’d love to meet with you to hear what God is up to in your life!

Messiah... the High Priest!

The Genesis story, which most of you are familiar with, tells us that God created the world and “saw that it was good”. It also tells us that God created humans in his image, gave them rule over all creation, said it was “very good”, and then rested. So we can see that God’s original design was for humans to be this final masterpiece --- BUT as the story goes… we weren’t satisfied with God’s plan and instead opted to do our own thing… and in effect pretty much messed everything up. One thing led to another and you can see what has happened …. War, hunger, crime, etc…

So the question becomes … what now? How do we get back to God’s original intent/masterpiece?

In the Old Testament, it was the priest’s job to “atone” for the sins of the people. Any idea what “atone” means? It means = to reconcile or literally to make “at one”. There was even one day each year called “The Day of Atonement”. This is some pretty beefy stuff so let’s break into small groups to explore what the Day of Atonement looked like:

READ LEVITICUS 16:3-34 **IT’S A LOT OF READING SO TRY TO MAKE THIS FUN…
ASK: WHAT DETAILS CAUGHT YOUR ATTENTION? … WHY?
HOW WOULD YOU SUMMARIZE THE HIGH PRIEST’S “JOB DESCRIPTION”?
HOW IS THE HIGH PRIEST USED BY GOD TO ADDRESS THE PEOPLE’S SPIRITUAL NEED … THEIR NEED TO MAKE THINGS RIGHT AGAIN WITH GOD?
HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF THIS WAS WHAT YOU HAD TO DO? …GIVE SACRIFICES TO GOD TO MAKE UP FOR ALL YOUR SINS…

The book of Hebrews in the New Testament also talks about the high priest. Hebrews 10 says, “Every priest goes to work at the altar each day, offers the same old sacrifices year in, year out, and never makes a dent in the sin problem. As a priest, Christ made a single sacrifice for sins, and that was it! …It was a perfect sacrifice by a perfect person to perfect some very imperfect people. …So, friends, we can now – without hesitation – walk right up to God, into “the Holy Place.” Jesus has cleared the way by the blood of his sacrifice, acting as our priest before God.”

So what we can see through this passage is that the Old Testament sacrifices and priests were never meant to FULLY take away our sin. They were just a symbol of what was to come … Jesus being the ultimate priest AND sacrifice. Jesus addressed humanity’s biggest problem. He didn’t sacrifice an animal …. He sacrificed His own life. And when we accept that sacrifice on our behalf we can know that we have become “at one” again with God.

Over the next 9 weeks our 7&8th graders are going to explore the different roles of Jesus as “Messiah”. The word “messiah” is Hebrew meaning “the anointed or chosen one”. Later in Greek it is also translated as “Christ”. This week we learned about the Messiah as the High Priest. Over the next couple of weeks we’ll look at the Messiah’s other roles!

"Do you know me?"
We all ask that question-especially students... and want people to answer,
"YES! I know you."
I was re-reading my short biography that's our BridgeWay website. While I love to write, reading between the lines was interesting to me. So much of what I wrote has deeper levels of who I am. Country-pastor's-kid, world view, my call to ministry and "the girls" in my life... thousands of stories are what goes into my three paragraph biography.
Challenge--write your biography, tell who you are, why you are who you are, and why BridgeWay... in 250 words or less!!
Here are my 234:
Hi, I’m Josh and have been at BridgeWay since May 2008. My hometown, Monroe City, IN, had 500 people where my dad was a pastor and school teacher. So, anytime I got in trouble at school or church, I was in trouble at home! Growing up in southern Indiana was great for my brother, sister and me, and easy for my parents. They would kick us all outside to dig holes, build forts, and ride bikes in the cow pastures. With that small town background, I knew I wanted to see new places. So I attended Purdue University, lived in Australia, and taught school in Houston, TX. I love to travel and find hidden treasures. Whether camping in Baja, Mexico, hiking to snowy patches in the Colorado Rockies, or jumping in a Nicaraguan taxi—these experiences shaped my life.My call to be a youth pastor was cemented after teaching, working as a camp counselor, and traveling. Through those different avenues, I loved discovering the hearts of kids are so close to God’s. And that excitement is still growing!Even with all those cool experiences, my girls are the best thing to come home to. Laura and I were married on August 8th, 2004, and our daughters Anson and Quinn are learning all their mother’s bad habits. (HA!) BridgeWay is a great fit for our family and the ministry that we are trying to live!

Announcements:

June 6th: Graduation Sunday!! We’ll have be playing games and learning names…
Who is scheduled to help at FAMJAM that night?? Sign up to help!!

Introduction to the Lesson:

1 and 2 Peter are short letters for teaching “strangers in the world, scattered” Christians. There are tons of themes that run through these books that are applicable to our daily lives. We are looking at 1 Peter and connecting it to our lives as we get ready to be on summer break! As we are home and on vacation, there will be several people that we can share our faith with… think about how we can react to them as we discuss today!

Discussion Questions:

Read Matthew 5:43-45 and 1 Peter 4:8-

"You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven.

Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.

We are commanded to love everyone. How difficult is this for you?
What are some ways you can get along with people, even if they annoy you?
Ned Ryerson’s assignment is to sell life insurance. As Christians, we are assigned to carry the good news of eternal life to others… Do YOU bring people closer to God or push the away with your words and actions? (examples)

Wrap Up/Application:

In big church, they are studying 1 Peter 2:12-

Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.

What is the most positive trait in the way you interact with others?
How can you change the way you interact with others?

That’s one of the main things God reminded me of this Monday when Patty McCauley and I went to Fatima with some high school students. Another truth God helped me remember:

It’s really rewarding to be vulnerable in front of God.

I heard our students working at vocalizing these two truths after we had spent about an hour apart from each other. So COOL to hear teenagers talk with excitement and tears about:

Jumping all over the Bible and reading different Pslams and stories to be reminded about God’s goodness and beauty
Walking a prayer labrynth and being humbled in the middle of it
Journaling about friendships and the desires that are filled… and those that aren’t
Realizing “I’m in a good place right now with God!”
Thinking and speaking with wisdom on why and how we create space in our lives for God to move and change us

I’m praising our God for His acitivity in our students lives—and our leaders!

Patty and I both talked and celebrated that God moved in us… we invite anyone to come see and hear God move at our Fatima days!

Introduction to the Lesson:

James is a book of commands! Over half of the verses are imperative statements. These commands tell us how to live out a Christian life in plain words. We are going to be looking at a few verses that says we have to do more than just listen to what the Bible says… we have to “do what it says” (v. 22).

Discussion Questions:

Read James 1:19-27, create a graph and discuss four verses thinking about what “I do” and what “I could do”.

What challenges you as you grow as a Christian?
Pastors c. Reading the Bible on your own
Parents d. Music e. something else?

Wrap Up/Application:

The memory verse for today is:
James 1:22: Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

Your job this week is to write three post-it notes or note cards out of James and DO THEM!

Week of May 16
Mission Trips are for training: read the Luke 9 & 10. Jesus didn’t send people out because of their maturity, but to move them toward maturity and a deeper understanding of His love!

Week of May 23
Mission Trips are for others’ good: read Luke 4 & 5. We are imitating Christ’s love for the world by serving and building relationships with others!

Week of May 30
Mission Trips are for God’s glory: read Matthew 28 & Acts 1. God’s glory is made known when others see Christ’s love, hear of His love for them, and choose to follow Him!

Week of June 6
Mission Trips are a way that God uses US! Read 1 Peter 2:9-10. Calling ourselves “Christians” isn’t the end goal of our lives. God changes our lives so we can change the world!

Week of June 13
Mission Trips are an adventure! Read 1 Corinthians 7-9 (try the Message version).
“I can’t predict everything. I can’t control everything. So, I’m willing to dive in and do what each situation demands—with a great attitude!” Say this statement out loud… twice!

It is natural to do the “easy thing” in life… laziness is the mother of all invention. (Is that a quote?) Judaism is NOT an “easy thing” in life. This religion was set up as God’s perfect religion. When humans couldn’t live under the laws of Judaism, Christ came to live sinless-ly, to die sacrificially, and to create a new way to gain access to God the Father. Jews who heard of Jesus were confronted to live under their old ways or accept Jesus’ new way of living. Hebrews is a letter to those men and women…
Discussion Questions:
School and Summer Questions

What’s the WORST part of getting ready for school each day?
What’s the BEST part of summer each day?
When summer starts—will you forget to ________ ? (the worst thing from school)
When school starts next year—will you forget the ________ ? (the best thing from summer)

You won’t forget getting up at 6 to catch the bus; or staying up way late finishing your project; or feeling alone in the lunch room when summer starts. When school starts in the fall you won’t forget swimming, and vacation, and watching TV all day.
That worst of school and best of summer go with Hebrews 8:13—

Read and Discuss Heb. 8:13 ‘‘‘By calling this covenant "new," he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and aging will soon disappear.’’’
It was really hard for lots of the Jews to forget the “old” covenant.
Think back to when you were young and first hearing about God, was there something that you believed as a little kid that you know is different now?

Wrap Up/Application:
Have a conversation with your parents this week:
Ask them about pieces of their old life that have been hard to quit. Some parents may have been smokers, some may have been fighters, some may have totally rejected that God loves them.
Ask them what events or people changed their lives and thoughts. It may be a pastor, parent (your grandma or grandpa!), or a friend.
Write a letter to God telling Him who you think He is…
Pray that He will show you the truth of His nature.

Philemon The Act of Faith

Philemon was an owner of a slave named Onesimus who had run away. Both men were now Christians in the time that Paul is writing… and Paul is sending Onesimus back to Philemon. Paul is reminding Philemon the freedom that he, Paul, gave Philemon from sin—by teaching him about Christ—is similar to the grace that he, Paul, believes Philemon should give to Onesimus.
Discussion Questions:
In your small group play the “telephone game”: whisper the following lines into the person on your right’s ear and send it around the circle; only repeat it once:

“When cow’s please their mothers, they snort and snuff and never talk gruff.”
"Pokey puppies become porky puppies when putting purple pancakes in their mouth.”

Read Philemon verses 4.5:
I always thank my God as I remember you in my prayers, because I hear about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints.
Q: Paul heard good things about Philemon from far away… that’s awesome! Tell me a “good thing” that someone can say they might hear about you?
In your small group play the “share the beat” game: one person begin to clap on a simple rhythm. Slowly add more of the same or different beats until there is a “song” of rhythm… direct a big ending—or laugh at how crazy it sounds!!
Read Philemon verses 6.7:
I pray that you may be active in sharing your faith, so that you will have a full understanding of every good thing we have in Christ. Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the saints.
Q: One of the things Philemon does is share his faith; there’s many ways to do this: How have you shared your faith in the last few weeks??
Philemon “refreshed” Paul’s heart living out what it means to follow Christ.

Timothy was a young man that Paul began to encourage. That encouragement grew into training. And the training became Timothy’s life work! We can read Paul’s letter to Tim and apply it to our lives…
Discussion Questions:
use the worksheet:

Read both versions- which do you like better? Why?
Can you re-write those passages into your own words?

What gifts has God given you? Are you using them?
Who is the one person that encourages you? What does he/she say or do?
  Wrap Up/Application:
the memory verse for today is:
1 Timothy 4:12 Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.
a. we set examples in:
i. Speech- Do I encourage others or talk about others? How will you be aware this week… decide as a group your “reminder”.
ii. Life- Who is one person that I trust to talk with me about my life/choices? Tell him or her
iii. Love- Commit to praying for your friends this week
iv. Faith- growing in faith is SO important… try writing one bible verse a day in your own words
       a. use 1 Timothy 4 or 1 Corinthians 13
v. Purity- use your “group reminder” and be pure in these three ways:
        1. no mental or verbal cuss words this week
        2. get rid of one song on your Ipod that you know God doesn’t want on there… or turn the radio/channel at least once this week
        3. talk to God once a day in your own words…

While living in the Last Days, we as Christ followers are called to live a specific lifestyle. Get along among yourselves, each of you doing your part. Our counsel is that you warn the freeloaders to get a move on. Gently encourage the stragglers, and reach out for the exhausted, pulling them to their feet. Be patient with each person, attentive to individual needs. And be careful that when you get on each other’s nerves you don’t snap at each other. Look for the best in each other, and always do your best to bring it out. Be cheerful no matter what; pray all the time; thank God no matter what happens. This is the way God wants you who belong to Christ Jesus to live.
Discussion Questions:
1. Is this teaching hard to live out on a daily basis? Why?
2. What areas do you struggle with? (Ex. Are you physically/mentally/spiritually exhausted? Do you need to learn to be more patient?)
3. What does “bring out the best in others” look like?
4. Who can you be attentive to this week?
5. Are you “cheerful no matter what” and “thank God always” reality… why? When?
Wrap Up/Application:
1 Thessalonians 5:11 Speak encouraging words to one another. Build up hope so that you’ll all be together in this, no one left out, no one left behind. I know you’re already doing this; just keep on doing it.

Ephesians 6 the “armor of God” chapter
Ephesians 6:10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. It’s telling us to rely on God and HIS power, not our smarts, our parents, or what ‘feels’ right! The pieces of “armor” are ways to fight: lies; emotions and self-value; lack of motivation; set-backs/temptations; and doubt. BUT if we aren’t training ALL week- then we can’t fully attack with our best weapon: knowing God’s word.
Discussion Questions:
1. Training: Partner up and wheelbarrow around your small group space.
Question: Who is the #1 person partnering with you as you follow Jesus??

It could be parent/person at church/or a friend at school…
Very important to know who has your back!!

2. Training: one person lay STIFF AS A BOARD on the floor. Every one in the group put their hands under and raise the person TRUSTING you up in the air

LEADER hold the head/neck
Do this for the people in the group

Question: Satan attacks our hearts—our emotions/trust/self-value. God wants us to protect our heart.

When you are HURT- what do you do?
FRUSTRATED? SAD? OVERJOYED? TIRED? IMPATIENT?

3. Training: Using simile and metaphor, re-word these statements:

That Jeep is too big!
Josh, you can’t do that…
I don’t believe you.

Question: attacks and doubt from Satan are all around our world.

When are you an attacker? When are you a defender?
Show the group your best combination of Karate attack moves!

Wrap Up/Application:
We can’t allow church to be our only training during the week if we want to follow Jesus. Commit:
1. Read Ephesians 6 each day (YES, the same chapter)
2. Understand the “Armor” and how they defend against Satan’s attacks
3. Tell the #1 person who has your back that you are preparing for war.

1 Corinthians 12:12 The Body of Christ

Paul compares the body of Christ to a human body. Each part has a specific function that is necessary to the body as a whole. The parts are different for a purpose and they must work together. We have to be aware of two common errors:
1. being too proud of our abilities;
2. thinking I have nothing to give.
It’s easy for differences to divide people—but we all have one thing in common: Christ. This truth brings us all together.
Discussion Questions:
1. How easy it to connect with students in other “clicks” or peer groups? (guys/girls; honor roll/slackers; athletes/band; popular/not-popular; dress styles)
2. Is this different in the church? Is it ok??
3. It’s easy to think of others as different, label them, and forget them! What can you gain from connecting with people who are different than you?
4. Think of one friend; how are the two of you different from each other?
5. How do your differences “fit” the two of you together?
6. If your friend was describing you… what strength would they say about you??
Wrap Up/Application:
When Paul uses the image of the body, he is reminding us that we all are different parts… the best part is: we all have the same heart! That is Jesus! Remember Romans? The “gospel” is the good news, and that good news is Jesus came for our sin so everyone can join His body!! 1 Corinthians 12 is the reminder that we are a piece of the body of Christ!
This week put YOUR part of body into practice by committing to one of these actions:

Be the HANDS/FEET by SERVING in a children’s classroom. Email Jenni Craig and set up a date!! (jenni@bridgewaycc.com)
Be the GUTS/KNEES by PRAYING for the members of your small group… write their names down—right now!!
Be the THUMBS/MOUTH by INVITING a friend to BridgeWay next week! (7/8th grade
Be the BRAIN/EYES by READING 1 Corinthians and be ready to share 1 thought in your group next week.

This June, I’ll be leading a mission trip with HOMES OF HOPE to build houses in Mexico. We are flying to San Diego and will drive to Rosarita, south of Tijuana. There, we’ll work in the neighborhoods and build a complete house (with drywall, paint and bunk beds even!!)… and this is the coolest part—we will be working with the family that will live there. So it’s more than just building a house, we can build relationships too.

Here are the details:
q This trip will be the third weekend of June. The 17-21. We will leave on a Thursday and return Monday.
q It is open to 7-12 graders… and their families! This is a different twist on just a youth mission trip—we want a parent (or both) to go with us and share this experience together!
q If you don’t have a 7-12 grader, but think a trip like this is up your alley—great news, student ministry volunteers and family are invited too!! Spend this second semester making relationships with our students and then come on the trip with us!

We’d love to answer questions and give you more info, see Kim or I at the table right outside in the lobby before or after church—thanks!
